Already had enough of the bad weather and the endless advertisements for Christmas consumerism?
Me too! Which is why there’s no better time to start planning ahead for your 2025 vacations.
Getting off the beaten track isn’t always easy, especially if you don’t know where to go. You need inspiration.
So, although it sounds like an oxymoron, why not follow the crowds to lesser-known places that are just starting to trend instead?
According to Skyscanner research, these are the 5 worldwide destinations that have seen the biggest increase in search data over the past 12 months.
5. Portsmouth, Dominica
If you’re dreaming of soaking up some Caribbean sun then the fastest growing destination in the Caribbean right now is Portsmouth on the island of Dominica.
Portsmouth is a small but charming city (on the coast of a small but charming island), and it is best known for its outstanding natural beauty.
If your idea of the perfect tropical vacation involves beaches, waterfalls, and breathtaking national parks, then this is the place to be.
Some of the main attractions in Portsmouth are the Syndicate Falls and the Cabrits National Park.
The Cabrits National Park is no ordinary national park. It includes not only the tropical rainforest you might expect, but also wetlands and even a protected coral reef.
There’s also the ruins of an 18th century military fort and an abundance of lizards call this site home. Access costs $5.00 per person per day.
4. Baltimore, USA
You won’t have to go far to visit one of the world’s fastest-growing destinations: Number 4 on the Skyscanner list is right here in the USA.
Thee has been an incredible 217% increase in the number of searches for visitors to Baltimore.
Baltimore is a fascinating harbor city that is drawing crowds because it has something to offer every type of traveler.
Downtown Baltimore is relatively compact, which makes it refreshingly walkable. Attractions such as the Maryland Science Center, National Aquarium, and American Visionary Arts Museum are all in one close location.
One of the most popular attractions in Baltimore is to explore Fort McHenry. This will appeal to history buffs and patriots alike, as this is the place where the Star Spangled Banner was composed.
The Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine offers self guided tours, and as well as exploring the fort itself, you can also enjoy nature trails here. Entry costs $15 per person.
3. Siem Reap, Cambodia
Siem Reap is Cambodia’s second-largest city but it often doesn’t get the attention it deserves. By far the largest attraction in Siem Reap is the iconic Angkor Wat temple, and this attracts visitors from around the world.
But there are many other reasons to consider exploring Siem Reap outside of the Angkor Archaeological Park. Visit the vibrant and lively street markets in the city for both delicious street food and affordable souvenirs.
And if you want to be entertained while also fully immersing yourself in Cambodian culture then visit Phare – The Cambodian Circus.
This is more than just an ordinary circus. It also shares local folklore and is performed by disadvantaged students who live in the city.
Tickets start from $18 per person.
2. Tartu, Estonia
Estonia wasn’t on anyone’s travel radar until very recently when its capital city, Tallinn, was named the European Capital of Culture this year.
But if you want to go off the beaten track in this breathtakingly beautiful country then you should visit the city of Tartu instead.
Tartu has a magnificent Old Town and is home to one of Northern Europe’s oldest universities. The Estonian National Museum is located in the city too. If you’re looking for incredible architecture and fascinating ruins then there are few places better.
But that doesn’t mean that Tartu is grand or stuffy. In fact, the city has a relaxed and youthful feel with a renowned nightlife scene. And it’s convenient too. As a compact city, most of Tartu’s bars, restaurants and nightclubs are located on two parallel streets.
If you’re looking to party the night away try Maasikas Night Club. For a cozier and more laid-back evening Atso bar has a reputation for its great drinks and effortlessly cool atmosphere.
1. Reggio Calabria, Italy
Italy is a perennial favorite for American travelers hoping to explore Europe, but as a result the biggest name destinations such as Rome, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast are uncomfortably crowded with tourists.
Enter Reggio Calabria. Located on Italy’s southern coast, just across from Sicily, this is the tip of the toe of Italy’s boot!
Reggio Calabria is a breathtakingly beautiful destination and much less visited than many of Italy’s other hotspots. At least for now.
New flight routes to Calabria have led to an increase in interest in the region. So visit now before the hoards follow!
Some of the main attractions of Reggio Calabria include its beaches, harbor, and breathtakingly beautiful sea views. From the seafront, you can see clear views of the region’s famous volcano, Mount Etna.
But if you dig a little deeper, you’ll find that Reggio Calabria has a lot of unique cultural attractions.
The Archeological museum here is considered one of the finest in Italy. It’s spread over 4 floors and includes finds from the prehistoric to Roman ages. Tickets cost 10 euros ($11) per person.
